IWC – Who Are We?

The International Women’s Club of Belgrade (IWC) is a non-governmental and non-profit association run by volunteers with approximately 200 members from over 40 countries. The IWC welcomes and assists newcomers to Serbia; promotes knowledge and understanding of Serbia; fosters goodwill and friendship among members and raises funds for local humanitarian and community projects.

The IWC endeavors to contribute to long-term, positive change in the lives of the most vulnerable populations in Serbia and at the same time strengthen and support local non-governmental organizations. With the funds raised at the annual Christmas Bazaar, the IWC Charity Committee directs the IWC’s humanitarian efforts. In order to better focus the IWC charitable activities, each year the Charity Committee establishes certain priority populations to target. It then accepts grant applications and carefully reviews each project before providing any assistance. Once a project is approved, the IWC follows and monitors its progress to completion.

ANNUAL CHARITY BAZAAR 2014

The International Women’s Club (IWC) of Belgrade held its 14th Annual Charity Bazaar on December 7, 2014, at the Belgrade Fair, to support local NGOs working with vulnerable people in Serbia.

The charity event included volunteers from 46 countries selling traditional, national cuisine and drinks, souvenirs, books, toys, clothes, etc., in an exotic shopping atmosphere.  All proceeds will benefit charity projects in Serbia.  In addition, this year the IWC will help people who suffered during the devastating floods last May.

The Bazaar is not only a major charity event of the IWC, but is also one of the biggest fundraising events in Serbia.  Our Bazaar was opened this year by Her Excellency Mrs. Maja Gojkovic, Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia.

The event is always a lot of fun, and this year it was bigger and more colorful than ever – visitors enjoyed browsing through booths with products and goodies from all over the world.  Performers on stage offered a unique and glamorous Tour of the World.  Singers and dancers swirled with their music, rhythms and costumes from the Far East, to the Mediterranean, to Northern Europe and Latin America.  The public also was treated to stars such as:  Jelena Gavrilovic, top Serbian actress and singer, Maestro Aleksandar Simic, Nikola Matovic, a virtuoso flamenco guitarist, Cudesmo group with Katarina Pavlovic, to name a few.

The IWC organized a Raffle with many fabulous prizes, including:  24 bottles of President Nikolić’s homemade rakija; a beautiful piece of art – a mosaic table made by Serbia’s First Lady, Dragica Nikolić; two round-trip airplane tickets to Moscow donated by the Embassy of the Russian Federation; two round trip airplane tickets to Istanbul, donated by Turkish Airlines; a weekend for two at the Grand Hotel and Spa of MK Mountain Resort at Kopaonik; a stay in a beautiful apartment in Italy by Halldis Co., a weekend at Orhid Lake donated by Macedonia, etc.  Prizes also included many weekend vouchers, dinners, and brunches at Belgrade’s best hotels and restaurants, silk scarves and ties by Maruska, bottles of excellent wines from Kovacevic, Radovanovic, Aleksandrovic, as well as many other enticing prizes.

There was also a Kids’ Corner, where parents could leave their children for a couple of hours in the hands of babysitters.  While parents spent a couple of relaxing hours shopping, their children enjoyed plenty of fun activities such as face painting, making pottery, cutting out paper finger puppets, and playing in a Bouncy Castle.  The children were thrilled by a visit from Santa who came with a bag full of sweets!

Last year, the Bazaar raised over €139,000 and attracted over 5,000 visitors.  One hundred percent of the collected funds were allocated to charities in Serbia that work with elderly persons, gender-based violence and anti-trafficking, persons with disabilities, and other groups of vulnerable people.
